Foreign students who own a valid Canada study permit, and are enrolled in any Canadian educational institution, have varied options when it comes to working in Canada. Most jobs will not require students to get a work permit, but most off-campus jobs do require a work permit, though some are subject to certain exemptions.

• 1) Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): This program allows students who have graduated from eligible Canadian Designated Learning Institutions (DLI) to obtain an open work permit to gain valuable Canadian Work Experience.
  If the Canadian Work Experience is gained in TEER 0,1,2 and 3 helps the graduates to qualify for Permanent Residence in Canada through the Canadian Experience Class within Express Entry.


• 2) Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP): This is immigration program that allows individuals to bring in their spouse or common law partner or a conjugal partner by availing them the beneficial opportunities to study, work and live along with them in Canada
  If you are the spouse of a full-time student or a worker, you may be eligible for a work permit without an offer of employment.


• 3) Work Permit: For the majority of Closed work permit applications, the foreign applicant must have a job offer from a Canadian Business that is supported by Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
  Even the individuals who are exempt form the LMIA who are not required to obtain a work visa should be aware of the paper work they must prepare to guarantee they are admitted to Canada.
  
  A closed work permit and an open work permit are the two main ways to obtain a work permit in Canada.
  • a) Open work permit: A foreign National with a open work permit can work anywhere at any location as there work permit is not employer specific.
  • b) Closed Work Permit: A foreign national with a closed work permit must continue to work for the same employer at the same location unless their work permit is changed because closed work permits are linked to specific employers.
