Family Sponsorship

Canada aims to welcome more than 100,00 family class immigrants annually as part of its immigration levels plan. The spouses, partners and children program welcome about 80% of these immigrants and rest 20% under the Parents and Grandparents Program.

Family Sponsorship has two essential components

  • • It enables your family member to enter Canada and obtain permanent residency (PR).
  • • Sponsor must make a commitment to provide for basic needs to support that person financially.

Eligibility to Sponsor

  • • Must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada
  • • 18 years of age or older
  • • Able to support the sponsored person

There are different programs for the family members that maybe sponsored under the Family Class Sponsorship Program:

  • Spousal Sponsorship

    Spousal Sponsorship includes married couples, conjugal partners (including same – sex relationships, and common- law partners).


    Are you eligible to sponsor your spouse?

    • • You’re at least 18 years old
    • • You’re Canadian Citizen, a permanent resident of Canada
    • • You’ re able to prove that you’re not receiving any social assistance for reasons other than a disability
    • • You can provide for the basic needs of any persons you want to sponsor
    • • You can prove your relationship with the sponsored person is genuine by providing supporting documentation

  • Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship

    The Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program (PGP) allows Canadian Citizens and Permanent Resident to sponsor their parents and grandparents to Canada permanently.


    Eligibility

    • • Be at least 18 years of age
    • • Be a Permanent Resident or Canadian Citizen living in Canada
    • • Be a child or grandchild of the person you are sponsoring
    • • Meet the minimum necessary income required for the size of their family

  • Dependent Child Sponsorship and Other Sponsorship

    In order for their dependent children to live with them in Canada, Canadian citizens or permanent residents must sponsor the children. Adopted children and other orphaned family members are included in this. In rare instances, sponsorship may be extended to further family members.


    If a child is under 22 years old, is not married, or in common law relationship, they are regarded as dependent. A child who is older than 22 years old and has a physical or mental impairment that prevents them from being able to support themselves, may be regarded as dependent.


    Eligibility

    • • You and your child abroad must be approved by IRCC to receive a visa
    • • Must prove your relationship with your child you are sponsoring, either by birth or by adaption certificate
